In some cases they may be nesting in the wall cavity, if the space is wide enough for them to squeeze in, while in other situations you may find a raccoon that is actually trapped there.

Examining The Area For Access Points
If you are worried about a raccoon nesting in a wall cavity, then you will often see other signs such as unusual animal feces in your yard or garden, or food that has been stolen and garbage bags torn open. The first step for dealing with this type of infestation is to examine the area for where the animals are getting in and out, and usually, either around the base of the wall cavity or around the top, you will find a small hole where they are getting in and out.

The signs of a raccoon trapped in a wall cavity will often be quite different and easier to identify, as the animal will often become panicked and frantic, meaning you will hear strong scratching sounds coming from the wall cavity.
